The Nagauta-shamisen is also called the Hosozao-shamisen, and it is mainly used as a musical accompaniment for kabuki, Ogie-bushi and Awa-odori, having a brilliant yet subtle sound.
The bottom part of the instrument’s neck has a beautiful curve called “hatomune” (pigeon's breast).
Everything from the Nagauta-shamisen’s hatomune curve to the itomaki (peg) details are manufactured based on Komatsuya’s expert craftsmanship, which is founded upon uncompromising standards.
An experienced artisan carefully covers the instrument’s body with skin while checking the preciseness of each musical tone. The manufacturing process of all our products is concluded by conducting a sound test using an acoustic measurement device.

Jiuta-shamisen, kouki/karin wood, an artificial skin “Ripple” used.

The Jiuta-shamisen is also called the Chuzao-shamisen. It is used in sankyoku (music for three instruments) ensembles, performed using the Jiuta-shamisen, koto and shakuhachi. The shamisen’s smooth sound is designed to complement perfectly that of the koto.
The Jiuta-shamisen manufactured with Komatsuya’s expert craftsmanship not only boast beautiful acoustics but also feature a beautiful form.

Tsugaru-shamisen, kouki/karin wood, an artificial skin “Ripple” used

Tsugaru-shamisen, kouki/karin wood, an artificial skin “Ripple” used.

The Tsugaru-shamisen is also called the Futozao-shamisen, and is the largest of all shamisen types, creating a truly dynamic soundscape. Although the shamisen in general was originally designed to be played as a musical accompaniment, the Tsugaru-shamisen is often used for solo performances, just like a guitar.
This style of shamisen features an “Azuma-sawari,” which enables easy adjustment of sawari (buzzy timbre that may remind you of the sound of a water stream) using a metallic screw device.
Everything from the Tsugaru-shamisen’s broad neck to tenjin (headpiece) is manufactured in accordance with Komatsuya’s expert craftsmanship to ensure the acoustic resonance of the sawari, living up to our policy of uncompromising standards.

  • Materials: Ripple, an artificial skin for the shamisen, and Hiba, a kind of cypress.

Folding stool using the Ripple, an artificial skin for the shamisen. This folding stool, which can be regarded as the origin of the Ripple, is put into commercial production! The development of the Ripple started from this folding stool.
The Ripple, an artificial skin for the shamisen, is a product developed by the President of Komatsuya, who was inspired in his childhood by a folding chair made by his brother. On one day in his childhood, he was impressed by a bouncing sound made by flipping a finger against the cloth that covered the seat of the folding chair, when the cloth was so tight while the folding chair was unfolded.
